What's the best "contemporary" stuff?

by tea-guy » Mar 19th, '09, 09:51

I'm looking to build a list of some of the best contemporary teaware.

I like a lot of the stuff over at ForLife (http://www.forlifedesign.com)

I also found this little renewable cup!
http://www.enjoyingtea.com/labate.html

What all have you found? :D

I think those are neither functional nor beatiful, authentic chinese and japanese teaware are works of masterful craftsmanship, these shown there are rubbish.

The difficulty is in providing an atmosphere welcoming to those who may not quite be into tea as your or I. Decor plays a big role in whether someone enters a shop as they are passing by.

While I certainly use my favored Japanese tea cups for most of my tea drinking habits... I can't say I would want those same forms to be presented to me if I were in a shop.

What I'm really looking for are suggestions of things I could look into for when I get around to opening my own teahouse and will need to present customers with something functional, and "contemporary" for use inside the shop. Something not as costly to replace as a Japanese set of Hagi or authentic handmade Chinese teaware...

A bit rough, don't you think?

The OP is asking for more suggestions for contemporary teaware, not a critique of the ones he posted. Beauty and functionality is in the eye of the beholder.

Beehouse is very popular. Not my choice in teaware, but I do own one and it is nice to have around for certain teas.

I second Beehouse. They look swanky and are user friendly. There is a bistro here in town that uses them for their teas and it gets the job done farely well.

Our local chinese restaurant had porcelain gaiwans for tea serving, half of them were stolen, the rest broken, I understand your concern when opening a teahouse or something comercial you don`t buy teaware by national treasure degree masters.

For Western Ware

by Intuit » Mar 19th, '09, 14:45

For Western Style brewing, talk to the EnglishTeaStore.com, find out where they order their teapots and cream/sugar sets. Very reasonably priced, gets the job done for commercial and private use.

Have to agree with oni, the tea-bag pot and bamboo cup designs are not my 'cup of tea'. There is something...foo-foo about these colors and design of the teabag teapot, beyond the questionable use of teabags for serving quality teas.

The mystique of introducing customers to whole leaf teas is worth considering other teaware.

Asian teaware (heavy duty porcelain) can be had for very reasonable pricing at numerous wholesale /. world-trade outlets.

Not sure about Asian pottery, but I would look to Dens for cheap-but-decent classic red kyuusu made in China, featured in the new customer green tea kits.

I would venture to say that most of Adagio's ware is relatively modern and from my experience well made.
We were fated to pretend.
