animated avatar

by spot52 » Apr 11th, '09, 12:37

I am angry that some people had to use obnoxious animated avatars and ruined it for the rest of us. There are simple non-distracting avatars out there. heck I had one on my profile and posts for a week before someone noticed or commented on it. I even drew attention to it.

I understand that you may not share my opinion, and that is ok. You may even think that I am overreacting. But I do not appreciate you mocking me by posting an emoticon rolling its eyes.

Unfortunately this is life. It happens everywhere, all the time and on every scale.
But nonetheless it happens. And when it does, dicisions have to be made.
Just a fact of life. Obey the rules and learn to appreciate what you have.

Just remember, everyone can express opinions on TC, however I grow concerned when I sense escalating rhetoric. Since I sense this has already happened, I will ask that opinions be expressed if you have any ... without directing them personally.

I think the three main issues mentioned by members were the somewhat obnoxious ones, an increase in the number of animated avatars (and concern that the trend would continue), and the fact they are distracting when reading page after page of a text forum. The forum is about posts after all. I also think it is partly because this is a "tea crowd."

You will also notice that Signatures are not enabled on this forum either, same reasons.

A few members had noticed your avatar prior to your post calling attention to it.

Thanks. I appreciate it. Seen in that light, the animated part is a funny pun.

I wish that those concerned people would kindly PM me and alert me of the rule violation. It feels like being tattled on when its done through a mod. Of course I know that they may not want to, but then they should just leave it alone.

Anyhow. I am done with this. I just wanted a chance to express my opinion on the subject since the old topic was closed and I was not here at the time.

Of course, my animation did not of the following in the list of annoyances.

I am glad to see that you are also posting on the forum.

Members are encouraged to inform moderators of actual rule violations, hardly tattling. Members do not get paid the big bucks to deal with these issues. Actually, neither do I.

But defering to a moderator can prevent flame wars, etc on the forum. It is simply not their job to do so.

Usually they are informing me about spam, this was an unusual case.

I don't know. I think community is the idea being striven towards here. I would honestly send a polite pm to someone just to help out. Part of being in a community is being responsible and helpful.

I realize that your perspective is different than mine. But it is o.k that I disagree and am slightly offended by it.

I have to say I agree with spot; I don't see anything wrong with a friendly PM. Running to the mods every time one has a minor gripe does seem a little like running to the teacher instead of dealing with your own problems. These issues should usually stay in PMs though and not in the general forum, just as you wouldn't confront someone in real life with the rest of the schoolchildren in tow.

(I do think animated avatars are annoying, btw, but you can always pause them by hitting Esc so whatever.)

I am not saying members should not or cannot PM others regarding rule violations, however it is wrong or at least belittling to imply reporting actual violations to a moderator is tattling. It is simply not the responsibilty of members to send a friendly PM which is also confronting violators, some of which can simply be intentional violators looking for a fight anywhere they can find one. We have had more than one of these members. If a member chooses to do so, they should also prepared to deal with possible negative response.

In fact, had not a new forum topic been created to discuss this and the OP had not stated that nobody noticed the animated avatar, Spot52 would never had known that I had received any PMs about this.

But this topic is about animated avatars. Regarding hitting Esc to still animated avies, if you are writing a post or PM at the time you hit Esc, you risk losing everything you have written. I know from personal experience.

+1
I'd be annoyed if a non-mod sent me a rule violation notice –well, more annoyed than if a mod sent it.
