I bought this small pot at the weekend market here in Bangkok a couple of months ago. It was filthy so I cleaned it up as best I could. Anyone care to try and identify the maker, age, and, clay?

There is a mark underneath the lid but very difficult to see and photograph.[/img]

The chop is 沈炳南制,made by Shen Bingnan. I guess the 2 chops under lid will be his last name and first name chops.
The pot looks very nice! But I would feel nervous about buying pots that look filthy. I once bought a pot online, which looks pretty good from outside but turned out to have shoe paste stuff inside
But since you bought it on site, it's ok as long as you know there is no nasty stuff there.

I don't like buying filthy pots either. I have been in several shops that specialize in 'ageing' teapots.gingko wrote:The chop is 沈炳南制,made by Shen Bingnan. I guess the 2 chops under lid will be his last name and first name chops.

Also, all of the pictures I have seen of 'ageing' pots have the pots stuffed in a bucket of water with grass and tea leaves, and there is invariably a cigarette butt floating inside one of the pots.
茶也醉人何必酒?
Maybe I exaggerated a bit when I said filthy. It was dirty. Lots of stains, no cigarette butts. I boiled it and seasoned it because who knows what was in it. I paid $25 and it has given me more enjoyment than that so far. It didn't look like one of those purposely 'used' pots we hear about. The seller knew nothing about its history.
I still would like to know what kind of age and clay it has. And, if anyone knows when the maker Shen Bingnan was/is active.
Thanks much.

Well, I bought this one and the copy of the Gu Jing Zhou, pictured as the avatar of Chrl47 together at the weekend 'flea market' in Bangkok. Oridnarily, I think you're right, i usually stay away from this type of pot but boredom sometimes dictates my actions. It's not bad with yancha. What kind of clay do you think it is beside bad clay?
Not a very good copy, eh? Have you heard of the maker? What kind of clay do you think?chrl42 wrote:It's a copy of Gu JingZhou's Yun Jian Ru Yi Hu, one of the hardest pattern ever to make.
no..chrl42 doesn't have a copyTead Off wrote:Chrl47
Also, can you help on the zisha pot that I posted earlier? Thanks for your knowledgeable input!!
