What is Your Tea Idiosyncrasy?

by bambooforest » May 13th, '09, 12:37

Let's all gather around the camp fire and share with one another our Tea Idiosyncrasies.

Do you have one? More importantly, if you do have one... are you man or woman enough to share it here amongst your peers?

I have one. In fact... I have many, but I will share just one:

If I have two teas in the day and go for a third, I ensure it's either medium or lower grade. I just feel that more than two sessions of the really good stuff would be excess.

There you have it.

Your turn...

I won't buy a tea because of its quality/price ratio.

I won't use any mugs that have had coffee in them for drinking tea, even if they were washed in the dishwasher. The same goes for travel mugs. I have two travel mugs and a thermos that are just for tea. One of the travel mugs goes everywhere with me any time I leave the house, filled with tea before any outing.

I will never drink the exact same tea 2 times in a row, nor 2 times the same day. And I avoid the exact same tea as my first tea of the day on successive days.

I used to have more, but have chilled out a bit after 10 years of drinking tea I guess.

That's pretty impressive, Chip. I'll add another thing you apparently do that you neglected to include... You won't open the same bag of tea consecutively.

You champion variety like no other... except maybe Sal.

The way you plan your tea consumption... I am certain... is generally optimal for tea enjoyment. That said... could it be that the greatest determining factor of how much we enjoy our tea is our attitude?

Oh yeah, I forget my own idiosyncrasies.

I have likely never opened a bag of the same exact tea right after finishing one. Even my fave tea gets a break for the sake of variety. It would make me sad if I simply got tired of Yutaka Midori.

I have some drinking cups that have red colour in their pattern, and out of them I will only drink black tea or darker oolongs, never a Tie Guan Yin. In the same way, I do not want to drink black tea out of my celadon cup, only teas with light colour.
The noise comes from the other side of the mirror

I have 7 copies of my favorite cup, in case accident happens
I would get a second copy of my favorite teapot, if I could find one. :P

You should put one of each in different rooms so that no one can take them all out in one shot. I'm not saying my ex used to throw things that I liked or anything.

Hey mine's the same as Chip

I never drink the same tea twice in a row or twice in the same day. (not counting multiple infusions of the same leaves of course)

I always, after pouring my tea, lift the lid on the kyusu and inhale the aroma and steam.. not sure how idiosyncratic that is though?

I do that before pouring to see if it's ready.

I'm very particular about my teacups. I like to drink my tea in a cup I like. It somehow makes the tea almost taste better, because I like the cup. I tend to go shopping for hours when I want a new tea cup, because I have such particular tastes and I have to imagine myself drinking tea with that cup before considering buying.

I also like all my teacups to look slightly different. I have a few cup sets, but love my teacups to be all different and unique!

I once did a yarn and teaswap on Ravelry (its a knitting/crochet thing). The person who I traded with sent me a cup which was definitely not my style. It was a teacup that had the word "tea" written all over it and little teapots on it. Definitely not me...it felt...like I should be in a room covered in doilies, paisley table mats, and with lace window curtains. Needless to say I used it for a while, and then donated it to the cabinets at work!

So yes...teacups...its so important to me! And for some reason I don't like drinking out of paper cups...like the ones at starbucks and such. Does something to the tea I think...or maybe its just the tea I don't like.

I am the opposite about my cups; well sort of. I had the most obnoxious cup with a snowman juggling snowballs on it (come to think of it, that is morbid...like a human juggling cannibal meatballs)
ANYHOW, needless to say the cup was not my style. however, the cup was the perfect size, weight, and had the perfect handle. I used that cup so much and when it cracked, I was devastated.
