About to voyage into Japanese greens...

by Dresden » May 20th, '09, 13:53

Well folks,

Up to this point the only japanese green I have had any experience with is Genmaicha. That is all about to change.

Today I am ordering this kyusu from O-Cha and the sampler pack from Den's. I look forward to experiencing the wonderful tastes that so many have described.

My time for the next few days will be filled with anticipation and searching the many threads on brewing japanese greens.

On a side note,

I plan on continuing to start my morning with Genmaicha. Can anyone recommend a good one since Adagio seems to be out of it until July?

Thanks,
Mike

Dresden, welcome to the world of Japanese greens outside of genmaicha! You'll never look back :D

I'm sure you'll enjoy Den's sample pack--it's the best intro to Japanese greens! The kyusu looks absolutely beautiful [note to self: stop looking at kyusus] ;)

BTW, since you like genmaicha, you might also like houjicha, and Den's Houjicha Gold is a great one to try.

Good luck!

I love the design of that Kyusu you picked from O-Cha.

Don't worry I can't stop looking at Kyusu's either.

I found Den's Genmaicha to be really good.

Thanks for the suggestions on the genmaicha.

I actually changed my mind about the kyusu. I decided to get this one instead. It just has the screen over the inside of the spout, so cleanup should be easy. The design of it kinda grew on me, too.

I can't wait!!!

Yeah that was probably a good choice. I own one of the kyusu with the suspended screen and cleanup is a little annoying... :?

Here you go: Matsuba Yunomi

I bought those a couple years ago. They're nice.

I own those matsuba yunomi, they are very beautiful, such a simple design, sometsuke can be so elegant. They may seem pricey, but generally japanese porcelain is expencieve.

I also got a set a year or two ago when Ed told me about them. They are fine cups ... for me a nice size and I love the matsuba theme. They are pricey, but compared to a lot of Japanese stuff, they are quite reasonable and the quality is good.

I think you will like the screen better on the pot you chose from what I have heard.
I like the ruffle edge top design. Even though only slightly, I think you will find smaller is better, although no one could have convinced me of that starting out. I just learned it along the way. Ha!

both pots are great looking- i have this one ( http://www.o-cha.com/green-tea/tokoname ... ki703.html ) with the swing screen- i choose it because i liked the pot design so much- and i broke the lid and needed to replace my pot and i replaced it with the same pot- clean up is ok- a few more swirls to totally rinse and upside down to dry- no problems yet but if you like both pots i'd go with the screen over the spout too.

welcome to the world of the greens :)

Woohoo!

Came home today and sitting there in my mailbox was my sampler from Den's!

My 4th "seasonal sample" that was included is fukamuhi special sencha.

Can't wait to dig into these japanese greens...But I'm wondering if I should wait for my kyusu to come in?

Also... A question regarding the kyusu.

Do you guys brew genmaicha in the same kyusu as your other japanese greens? Is there any flavor transfer?

Thanks,
Mike

I generally do not use a kyusu for genmaicha, I use a porcelain pot or tetsubin. The toasty flavor could transfer especially if it is not glazed and many are not glazed on the inside, I just don't want all my teas tasting a little like genmai.
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!
