by Chip » Jun 5th, '09, 01:10

Howdy everyone. Welcome to TeaDay. Please come in and share what is in your cup today.

Yesterday the vast majority of TeaChatters acknowledged the effects of components in tea on their bodies and mind. You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. How much does your "average" bag of your fave general type of tea cost, based on 1/4 pound or 100 grams. Please share with us.

I am looking forward to sharing TeaDay with everyone, bottoms up.

I picked over $20 because so many teas that I buy cost that or more. But puerh is generally pretty cheap per gram. Most of my puerh cakes cost a good bit less than 20¢ per gram. I am just starting to learn about the less expensive Japanese greens ... up to now it's been pretty much exclusively top notch sencha ... at top notch prices, and the same with oolongs and Chinese greens. But I am finding more teas at lower prices that are good for "everyday" purposes, so my average cost may be changing.

25-40$ for sencha
50$-80$ for gyokuro
100+$ for matcha
10-20$ for bancha
20-50$ for Chinese greens
25$-75$ for blacks and oolongs.

The average is a little above 40$ I guess.

Ippodo shincha in a few minutes.

Yeah, I chose less than $15 based upon the fact that I apparently can't do maths after 11pm.

I usually choose teas that are in the $18-25/100g range. Not because I'm shopping a price point necessarily, it just works out that way. $25ish is really my upper range for what I'm willing to pay for all but the occasional select shincha or "special edition" teas. There have been a few teas that I've paid $50-60/100g, but then I have only purchased in the smallest quantity available. Obviously, I'm not counting matcha in my calculations. Ha!

On another note, for the first time, I catalogued all of my teas -including samples - because I feel like I'm forgetting teas and risking losing them to just simply going stale.

I have more than 75 different teas. Fortunately for my ability to drink them up, nearly half of these are in "sample" sizes, meaning I'll be able to brew two regular servings from the samples. At least 20 of them are appropriate for iced tea, so I see lots of iced in my immediate future.

I need to clear some of these out, because I plan to make a run up to Seattle, and will likely visit NCTG and FLT. Yay!

Under than 10$ a 100g pack.
That's what I buy most of the time.

Thats for black teas that permit only one infusion (or sometimes 2).
That can go higher for sencha (up to 20$ a 50g pack) and oolong (10$ a 50g pack) because we can do multiple infusions.
If there were chinese greens at the same price that the oolongs I buy, I'd buy some but I'm not ready to pay the same price as sencha for chinese green.

I try to avoid buying expensive teas because I'm a student... and I won't have time to enjoy these... or money to pay the price of such teas.

The average per 100g of my fave general type of tea is probably around $25...that's for mainland oolongs (Dancong, Wuyi and Anxi) The Dancong tends to go higher with Wuyi more around the average and Anxi a bit lower...based more on what grades of each I buy than actual price differences between the regions. I tend to go for single bush Dancongs, kind of midrange Wuyi's and high commercial grades of Anxi (which actually I consider more low grade as compared to artisan teas)

I tend to view around $18-$25 as average.

If I spend less than that and get something I love I'm extra happy and if I spend more than that and get something I'm not keen on I'm extra grumpy.

Hrm, I went with $40+ because I think my favorite tea is either something like gyokuro, matcha, or aged puerh, all of which usually runs high. Then again, I also greatly enjoy a good cup of shou, which usually runs ~$2-4/100g. "Favorite" is such a hard term.

In any case, I took that aged black tea 8 rounds yesterday and this morning I decided to take it another 2 because it was pretty solid and tasty. This tea is >20 yrs old and was ~$17/100g... not too bad!

er,.. any where from over $40 to under $10. I'm all over the place when it comes to tea prices.

Currently drinking the cheapest Matcha I could find. Surprisingly its not nearly as bad as I had expected, but I'm still going to reserve it for cooking purposes I thinks.

Cost is something that I don't track, so I took a WAG and said about 25.

In my cup this morning
Careful selected from the best plants, on the best day, at the optimal time and hand processed by a farmer with generations of experience, this 'Wang' or emperor Tie Guan Yin is an exquisite Oolong tea. The lightly oxidised (20-30%) leaf produces a magical, clear liquor with a pale golden tones and the leaf, after a few infusions, is a glorious emerald green. The limited production of Can Sai Jin Pin is such that this tea is normally sold before it arrives in Wan Ling's Shanghai shop. We expressly reserve a limited amount for our European customers to enjoy.

Generally less than $20.

Genmaicha doesn't tend to be all too expensive unless mixed with good grade Matcha. ;-)

Many excellent everyday blacks and medium oolongs that I drink daily can be had for well under $10, some teas are in the $15 category (greener oolongs and the occasional better green or matcha).

Tiger Hill OP in my cup again. Yesterday was a horrid and very stressful day.

~$10 for me, though not on purpose. I just like cheap teas, I guess. I'm happy to spend more (within reason--I'm a student) for teas I like!

Think I'll try out my ToT Nilgiri blue while I finish up a paper. Last thing I need to do before my semester is over! I'll be glad to have the break.
