pu-erh storage - will pine be the death of this collection?

by cookiethemonster » Jun 7th, '09, 08:46

Hello all

First of all, I am the long-suffering girlfriend of an avid pu-erh collector. I've gotten him what I thought was a purely bamboo set of drawers to store the tea in, as I know that it needs to be as scentless as possible. However I get home to find that dreaded pine makes up the drawer compartments, and so I ask you this: have I ruined my boyfriends life forever by tainting his beloved collection, or does it not matter that much?

It wasn't intentional of course  I am not at all jealous of his obsession for tea and the attention it deviates away from me...

girl you got a lot of making up to do if you ever plan on getting this guy to marry you.

pine could be bad if it is near a heater in winter or the sun in summer. it has been my experience that heat brings out smells and the change of season from winter to spring seems the most effective for doing this. so get them out of the pine . save the future wedding. bamboo baskets ......if you relay gata have bamboo. some have cloth liners i have seen.

Hey guys, I think you're missing the forest for the pine trees.

This is an incredibly caring gift. This is someone who appreciates the eccentricities of her partner and is encouraging him to foster his interests. Rare.

I am not certain how critical a fault pine is. Aged pine is rather inert. Assuming this to be the case, and the drawer not air tight, pine might be ideal.

Again, it's in this case the thought that is of most import. She has already bought the chest and taken a lot of care in it's choice. I say she give it to her pu-pal and let's see how gallantly he responds.

You go girl!

I was impressed as well. Most of the women I date tend to discourage my eccentrics.

Perhaps something like linseed oil to seal the wood a little?

Why do I see a "Will linseed oil destroy my pu'er collection?" thread in the near future.

If you're worried about the linseed oil just put down some fresh pine to stop it getting at the tea

I'm not sure what mine is made of,.. I think cherry,.. but it did have a wood smell to it. I can't see that it affected my collection at all so you may be alright. I think the pu had more of an effect on the wood actually.

I don't want to take any chances, so I'm constructing a pumidor of alternating layers of fresh pine and linseed oil.

NO!!!!!!! Do not use linseed oil! I love linseed oil, dont get me wrong, we use linseed oil for our rifles for the stocks, it is strong smelling stuff, While the smell may be awesome, I would highly advise against any use of stain, oil or sealer in a puer holding device.
