Thursday TeaDay 6/11/09 Restaurant TEA misadventures?

by Chip » Jun 11th, '09, 00:59

Happy TeaDay everyone, and welcome to TeaDay. Please stop in and share what is in your cup today.

Yesterday responders indicated their ultimate reason for drinking tea. You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. In the topic discussion you will be asked to share your funniest or most unusual restaurant and TEA misadventure. Tea drinkers seem to have odd experiences in restaurants perhaps because our choice of drink is so "odd" to servers and the actual restaurants ... they have no clue of the love of tea we seem to have. So, please share.

I am looking forward to sharing TeaDay with everyone, bottoms up.

Hello, Tea Lovers

I voted ...no not really.
I'am spoiled about my loose leaf teas.
Most restaurants I go to have only tea bags.
I dont order tea at a restaurant because they dont have loose leaf.
I know there are tea cafe's and restaurants that serve loose leaf, but I have never been to one.
This morning, I'am drinking a nice hot cup of golden spring. The perfect tea to wake you up and get you going in the morning.
yours in tea
woodie

Nope, though partly because I don't order tea too much when out in restaurants.

Although... there was this time a friend and I went to a sushi restaurant and we ordered tea (after asking if it was green tea). When we got the tea, it wasn't really what we thought of as a green tea. This all happened before I learned a lot more about tea, so all I remember is that we were expecting something like sencha, but got some other type of green.

Not really funny.

Anyway, speaking of greens, I'm spending more time w/ TPHK this morning. Yesterday as a tea day was a bust! I was out ALL day and literally had about 50 minutes at home. Oh well. Hope everybody has a great day!

At a Vietnamese restaurant with an extensive tea section in the menu, I boldly ordered "a sencha tea". Ascentia red wine was delivered later. When trying to explain the mistake, the server remained somewhat baffled and unaware of this "sencha."

It eventually appeared, with a pyramid bag steeping in a tetsubin. Wasn't bad.

I've never ordered "tea" from a restaurant before :o but then again I live in the deep south so pretty much the only tea I could get is sweet tea...

I have been to a COFFEE and tea house that had no clue about tea though. Im the kind of person that has a thermometer and timer ready for my tea and when they just dumped boiling water on a green tea and handed it to me (and I didn't have my watch with me) I almost cried well that and cause they charged me 2 bucks for it.

This past Friday I was with two dear friends on our way out of town for a weekend of fun business training. We decided to stop at Bread Company (i.e. Panera) so one could get a chai latte. I saw on the menu board that they had iced green tea. I looked over and it was in one of those big orange juice bubbler machines and it was REALLY green....sounded refreshing...looked actually green...so I asked for a sample (it was @2.29 for a small size).

The server gave me almost half a glass...I took a big thirsty swig...GACK...I almost sprayed it all over the counter...it was horrible...sickeningly sweet...like koolaid on steroids. Between the GACK and the face I made, it was obvious to the server that I didn't like it. She said, "yeah, it is pretty nasty".

Glad I asked for a sample first!!!

I cleansed my palette with a couple of scoops of matcha shaken in my water bottle! Ahhhh, life is soooo good!

Party on,

I do not order tea (except sweet iced tea) at restaurants anymore. It avoids much heartache on everyone's part.

But, for mother's day I was given a spa day at my favorite spa in Austin. My appointment was the first of the day so I had extra time to lounge while they heated up the sauna. A lady came in and asked if I would like some hot tea. Without really thinking I replied that I would love some. I was soon handed a disposable coffee cup. I took a sip and was horrified. I asked what it was. The lady perkily replied, "Isn't is great?! It's Stash chai, one of my favorites!" I politely nodded and when she left I put about a tablespoon of honey into it to mask as much of the flavor as I could!

I had some really, really awful "Japanese" green tea, in what is actually a really good restaurant just a couple of days ago! It looked and tasted like really rubbish bancha and was steeped in boiling water! I would definitely go back, but not for tea!

Currently drinking Spring 09 Silver Needle from Jing (UK) Beautiful!

My two favorite local sushi places serve tea... one serves green tea that is probably cheap restaurant-grade sencha... brewed sort of inconsistently there, sometimes very strong and pretty nice, and sometimes too weak. The other actually has "oolong" on the menu, so I gave it a try and it wasn't half bad. I peeked in the pot and it's a teabag, but it's still got a distinct roasted oolong taste that's reasonably ok to drink. I had tea at one other tea place alittle further from home, and it was genmaicha and not bad.

I had iced unsweetened genuine morrocan mint in Disney Epcot at a street vendor in the Morroco area and it was excellent! I'm going back in July, and hope to sample some teas in China and Japan areas this time.

YM Shincha to start the day... just as magically delicious as last year's.

Mostly terrible tea.

by Intuit » Jun 11th, '09, 09:50

The local Japanese restaurant (great Sushi prepared under the watchful eye of a retired Japanese chef) consistently serves green tea that is so old it's tasteless.

Next time I tote my own, as I usually do when eating out/on travel.

The number of times I've had decent restaurant tea (not bagged) served in the last decade can be counted on two hands. :-(

Patiently awaiting delivery of new oolongs and a couple of Japanese green teas.
Noted: dedicated mail delivery by intrepid riders aboard horses with sweaty flanks (Pony Express) would be faster. *rolling eyes*

No name estate Ceylon in my cup.

I voted perhaps - not sure how "odd" it was really. It was "odd" to me at the time. When in Amsterdam I ordered iced tea, thinking it would be like we have here in the USA; unsweetened black iced tea. It is a staple at most restaurants here.

What they brought me was a bottle of Lipton's and a glass of ice. Now that wouldn't be too unusual, except it was carbonated! I had never heard of carbonated iced tea before. And no, I didn't really care for it.

In my cup this morning FF Soom Estate.

Have a nice day everyone!
