Wow! finally found a domestic source of authentic Japanese kitchen teas, in Edgewater, NJ, Mitsui Plaza! They sell bags of 50 mugicha bags for $2.50! And genmai cha - five different kinds! I got the Itoen - 300 grams for $3.50. Also another traditional tea, a smoked green mixed with barley shoots. I need more tea containers.

Also, Yuki sent me a box of greens from her local Jasco in Nara, Japan. Good times, good times.

If anyone is in the Northern NJ / New York City area, try to get to Mitsui Plaza. Trust me, it's awesome.

Do they have a website -

I'm specifically interested in the mention of 5 different types of GenMaicha!

Thanks!

Oh - here's one of the most reputable Japanes tea dealers, their english site:

http://www.itoen.com/

Their genmai-cha is GREAT (there's no popcorn in it, though).

WooHoo!!! A new place to drag my non-TEAfan husband!!!

That's what he'll get for dragging me around to all of those amusement parks this summer. Thank you for this info - I can't wait!

Amanda, let me know what you think after shopping there.

By the way, they also sell some super-smokin' fresh ramen packs in the refrigerated section, as well, as yakisoba and ongiri seaweed. And don't forget to get a bag of mugicha bags for $2.50 - 50 of them, enough for months.

Check out the tea isle, and tell us what you think!

(if you have any Japanese friends, it'll help, since most of the teas don't have English on them, and they can tell you which are the most popular, famous, etc. Either way it's a lot of fun to experiment with something new!)

...been there, done that.

I've traveled all across the US riding those things. I've riden more coasters than I'd like to admit. It is my husband's passion, and I love him very much...

In exchange, I plan to convert him to tea. It has not been easy

...I love the coasters but hate the long lines...no time for tea.

Waiting 1-2 hours per ride at 6 Flags is nutz. So I just drink tea and watch coaster documentaries instead...

Amanda - I sympathize. Growing up in New Jersey, it's like you have to love Great Adventure. I never really got it (although I did love WildWater Kingdom when I was a little kid).

Your plan is a noble one. ;)

We made it!

After 2 attempts to get into the crowded parking lot on Saturday, my honey and I finally made it to the Mitsuwa Marketplace.

This is a very dangerous place for those saving $$$

I bought a $7 tin of Matcha (it's super tiny ;)) and a bag of buckwheat tea. My sweetie purchased $20 worth of Japanese beer. I am a complete sucker for Japanese confections, and the candy isle did not disappoint. What was great about the super-small parking lot was that the store itself was not overflowing with people. There was also some fantastic shopping outside of the Food Market itself.

Definately check out Mitsuwa Marketplace. Don't go mid-day on a Saturday if you can help it. I look forward to going back so I can take my time and explore more!
