Do the first 2 characters mean 'Spring Roasted'

Hopefully the last 3 characters are Ti Guan Yin

the first two characters mean 'traditional'. and yeah the last 3 chars are indeed tie guan yin.

I went hunting today in town

Bought some ribbon at the craft shop

Bought some Printer Paper with Labels at the W H Smith Newsagents and Stationers [none of the specialist PC shops had any ]

Spent hours scouring the net for suitable templates for the labels I bought
A4 21 x 63.5mm by 38.1mm

I needed Ribbon that was wide enough to hold 38.1mm label, so bought some 50mm wide velvety ribbon in Dark Green and Maroon - this will be too big for my smaller canisters, so bought some 35mm and 25mm ribbon also - but need to find some suitable labels online.

My first attempt placed the reverse label the same way as the front label but when you lift it to confirm that you have identified the Chinese Characters correctly - it is Upside down - so I had to replace it upside down


I bought 2 sets of Printer paper labels - 1 with 10 sheets (21 labels per sheet) of Transparent Labels - $18 and 1 with 60 sheets (21 labels per sheet) of plain white - $12.

The plan was to use the cheaper ones for practice and detailed info on the reverse of the ribbon and the transparent for the Chinese Characters on the front of the ribbon.

After much heartache with the templates, until I realised the Printer paper property was not set to A4, I finally produced a label



Now why did I buy Dark coloured ribbon when the transparent labels work best with white or pale coloured paper.

It does not look very transparent on the front or on the reverse



and why did I choose velvet, the adhesion is not fantastic

A further problem is that the tin canisters have such a tight fit, that with the ribbon in place they wont close properly and it skews the ribbon as the outer lid is closed on it.

It works much better with the foil pad DTH canisters, but maybe I shall try coloured paper and a guillotine for the Double lidded tight fitting tin canisters

But I still intend to search out ultra thin ribbon, pale ribbon and more and different labels.

The Chinese looks good. I would suggest using paper instead of cloth. It'll make it easier to close your lid. You could tape the paper on using double-sided tape if you didn't want to stick it under the lid. You can use a tiny little piece of double-stick.

If you wanted to add dates to the teas, this is how we would do it here:

Traditionally we would right it vertically on the left side of the tea's name. The last character means "Year".

My photo of Shui Jin Gui in the shop does not look like the characters I have put on the ribbon

It does to me. It's the lower characters reading left to right. It's in cursive, but the same characters.

I use 3M post-it label tape. I love that stuff. Same adhesive as post-it notes, so it comes off without leaving a mess.

Each canister holds, 1, 2, or 3 of these sample tins. Works for me since I like to use washi, but don't like to dump tea into the oft too large washi canister. I also like these sample tins because they are completely seamless and small!

I also have a shelf with just these sample tins of teas that I do not use often enough to justify putting them in the washi, they are not visible ... so no biggie.

I have a sneaking suspicion they won't fit in most of my washi containers.

Looks quite nice H_M, if you can remedy the skewed lid ... What about punching holes in the top of the ribbon and running nice silky string around the top ... so it hangs w/o interfering with the lid?

Yes, from Upton where they are pretty cheap by the case, used to be around 50 cents each.

They do not fit in the narrow sized Washi like from Yuuki-Cha that are 6.4 cm wide.

The canister in the photo is from Ryu Mei and is 7.4 cm wide and works perfectly.
