too intense to be on the fence

Yesterday at the local Vietnamese place, I asked if I brought my own tea, could they hook me up with hot water. (It's not that their tea is bad, but I'm starting to want to know which of my favorite places will accommodate the request.)

The server said yes w/o hesitation, leading to a brief conversation about my tea ways. He was astonished at how much I told him I spend on tea in a month!

So he wondered what kind of tea I drink for all this money, and where it comes from. Answering that one even in brief took a minute, and touched on both decades-old tea and straight-from-processing sencha and Chinese greens.

My dining companion, who's known me for 25 years now, then commented, "You're wierd."

Yeah, you gotta ease people into your eccentric hobbies. Between tea, stunt kites and Go I've always got a lot of explaining to do. But if you kinda show them only small parts of your obsession at a time it's a lot warmer of a reaction, and usually even curiosity. I still get the "weird" comment a lot though. :?

I don't know, in some circles, obscure interests and esoteric hobbies are particularly well-regarded ;)

Yeah, but usually they don't put you in those places until you really go over the edge. Us moderate eccentrics are screwed.

Face up to it, Padre, you are weird! And a few of the rest of you might be too.
