Thanks everyone for sharing your first chawan-s.

My first ever chawan purchase, up to this point I used cereal bowls.

I was shocked by the size when this arrived, I mean you put 2-4 ounces of liquid in these humongous bowls??? Seriously? You have gotta be kidding me!

Fantastic piece; reminds me of a volcano.

Sweet chawan, Karmaplace. Nothing like looking forward to goodies in the mailbox; especially new teaware! :) My goodies from Japan are always fun to rip into. Their local newspaper wrappings/stuffings are as fun to unearth as the merchandise themselves.

A kuroraku piece by an old potter name Kitaguchi Museki, born in 1923. He has a kiln in Nara. It arrived just yesterday.

How would I condition this for its first use? It's a contemporary chawan.

I ordered this as well:

Wonderful 1st children everyone, wonderful.

I've been aching to share mine, but my camera has taken a serious downturn (it no longer displays the image for capture on the led - the led is working, shows all the little symbols, but only black background).

I'll try to think of something.

Love those first chawan's.

Ok, found a previous pick of my very first chawan, bought it in one of those kits that comes with chasen, chashaku, and natsume - the whole package was about $25.

cheers!

Can't you still take a photo? Who knows, it might turn out. It'll just have some extra wabi to it, that's all. ;)

Hmmm - you inspired me to take a closer look - I noticed there is no image in the viewfinder either.
I wonder if the aperture is stuck closed?
Eeeek.
:(
On the brighter side - maybe this means I need to get a new camera?
I'm intimidated by the prospect though.
sigh.

... for stuck aperture, bang lightly on hard surface, slowly increasing force til either camera aperture opens or camera flies apart ... either way, your satisfaction is guaranteed!

Just did some online poking around and seems like I've got a shutter problem. It had been doing this for a few months, but I could shut down and re- power up and all would be working. Now nothing. No amount of power down and then up again gets it working. And I've had it for several years, so no warranty coverage.
Sadly, I was thinking about getting a Rebel, but that's a canon too, and now I'm dubious about the resilience/lasting power of canons (btw, this camera has never taken a fall or been injured in any way, and it resides and has resided in it's padded case whenever not in use).

I might try tapping it respectfully but doubtful that'll help.

Now I need to think about a new cam that has quality, lasting power, and enough simplicity.

Although I prefer my iPhone 4 for simple camera work these days (it takes phenomenal pictures), I've got a Canon SD1000 point-and-shoot. I used it to take the photo in this thread. A poor attempt at macro work, but the lighting was off, etc. Wish I had a DSLR for teaware shots, but one thing at at time.

Anyway, I had a stuck shutter once. Banged it (not too hard) against the side of a boat a few times (I was out on Lake Ontario at the time for an airshow) and boom - it came unstuck. Been fine ever since.

My first Chawan was from TC TA SO #1, Pink Shino by Chicago Potter! The color looks lovely with the green matcha :)

Gave the cam a bit of firm tapping, and the shutter opened!
Now it's stuck again.
Oh well.
