HK belongs to China, right? China has so-called the Great Wall of internet. You need a proxy or VPN..like freegate and such..needaTEAcher wrote:Drax wrote:Check out Babelcarp as an easy resource for all of your tea-related Chinese terms. 朱 is done as 'vermillion' but either way likely refers to the *color*, not necessarily the specific chemical composition that is cinnabar (which would include mercury sulfide).
I can't speak for Chinese, but Japanese cinnabar tends to have the symbol 丹 (red earth) in the mix as well (such as 丹朱). Would definitely need to get a native speaker for better clarification on that one...
Just landed in Hong Kong, and babelcarp is blocked?!?!?!?!?!? Anyone know if it is still up everywhere else? Is it just HK?

There is no kind of internet censorship in HK--I can access BabelCarp just fine too.

Lol, I tried earlier when I was on the bus coming in. Admittedly, the connection was pretty slow, but I can't complain too loudly when I am using free wifi on a bus. Anyway, I tried again from the hotel and got the same message, in bright red letters: "Sorry, the web site has been blocked."
The internet just straight up dislikes me.

This thread title, "Yixing Clay Breakdown", has me thinking of banjos and mandolins.
Is this the TeaChat theme song?

Appalachian music as the theme for a group of people who discuss Chinese and Japanese teas? I dig it. Make sure to invite Chris Thile and Yo-yo Ma to your next formal ceremonyJBaymore wrote:This thread title, "Yixing Clay Breakdown", has me thinking of banjos and mandolins. Is this the TeaChat theme song?

Also, needateacher, maybe it's just your hotel. In my experience, hotels tend to have pretty onerous rules when it comes to using their wifi for some reason. I don't understand, cafes have free and unsecured networks for any guest who walks in the door, and yet hotels can't provide fully functional internet to their patrons who are paying a lot of money to stay for a few nights...

Poohblah,
Expensive hotels like guests to pay for services. Motel 6 will have 50 free channels on their tvs while a 5 star hotel has less than a dozen because of greed to collect several dollars for each movie a guest may choose to see. Likewise, fees for business services....
Perhaps some rich people don't care or know how much they are being ripped off. Others are on business accounts. Too bad for us humble folk.

We have been traveling now for 9ish months straight, across 3 continenets. I am constantly amazed by how true this is. It was most aparent in KL, where we paid less than US$10 for a great room with free wifi, free breakfast, and so much cable. Then our friend, who is a baller, got us a nice room together for about US$100, and we had to pay so much money for all that stuff. We were pretty pissed off.
Anyway, it didn't work on the bus or here, same message, but I will try when we hit an internet cafe today. Wish me luck at the Chinese consulte! China is determined to keep us out, but we WILL get it!!!!!
