The $130,000 Yixing tea pot

by TomVerlain » Dec 24th, '09, 10:11

From , Stéphane Erler's Tea Masters blog a report on the Beijing Tea Auction.

A zisha Shi Piao Hu pot sold for $130,000 US Dollars.

http://www.cguardian.com/pic.php?sessio ... rt91683622

I google translated the chinese, and it really says nothing about the teapot, age, maker, etc. Shi Piao Hu is just the shape. The heading is "GU Jing Ye Shi dipper pot Mariner"

I better go look in the attic now to see if I can retire early ---

Of course, it's a gu jingzhoug's pot. His pot could easily sold in the million. T

The site said: Gu Jingzhoug died in 1996, aged 81 and he did not make that many pots. He only made a batch every few years. And he was a perfectionist, any pot he thought was substandard, he would smash it up (shame, I'm sure even a misshape pot from him would still worth a few bobs). Tim is right, at present, his pot is worth over 10,000,000 RMB!

A great pot with a modern design. Notice the treatment of the handle. Sandy clay. Love it.

I've never really like the Shi Piao shape. I'd be O.K. with the pot if someone bought me it though. :D

I think some auction prices in China are higher than they would be if some large business companies were not participating in purchase. Chinese people like chatting about social news. When a business wins a famous auction, that's excellent advertisement and the news gets on all kinds of media. Even $1M on something may still be less expensive than TV commercial costs. :D

This is a very interesting take on this. What a clever way to spend advertising dollars!!!

What would a Buddhist have said if they were eating this?

I think Buddhists are allowed to eat dairy products :P But still, I guess they will just say, "may I trade it for a yixing?" :D

I never understand how people can spend over $1000 on any item on ebay, without actually seeing it on site  But compared with this cheese everything else seems more understandable.
Again my conspiracy mind is saying, could this be some ploy of ebay and that goldenpalace buyer

Gu JingZhou! Ultimate goal for Yixing collectors :) , Shi Piao was one of his favorite pattern, you can find a lot of different versions of Shi Piao made by old Gu.

If I may,
I also think there's different view of treating lao Gu's pot from those ebay jokers and college student's fine arts works adored by SOHO richies

For one thing, the Chinese people have a long tradition of culture of collection such as strange stones (Qi Shi), jade scrupture, caligraphy, furniture, pottery and among them, the most head-aching thing, Yixing teapot

The other is Gu JingZhou himself, there are 100,000 potters in Yixing making Shi Piao, and Gu is considered the best hand in any period of this field.

Lao Gu was not only the best hand but also re-established this system into a studying field, absorbed old patterns and re-innovated a design, started teaching as groups and organized it, diagnosed the clay and develope the way of mixing..

So to speak, he single-handedly made Yixing teapot bigger as nowadays and upgraded its presence, no matter Ming-Qing-ROC-communist China, or his friends, his students, his teachers, he's undisputed master of master agreed upon by all, and that's why his pot costs10 times more than Ming-Qing or other grand masters' pots.
