Tang Dynasty Buddhist Cliff Sculptures in Dazu. This is only one small section of this amazing World Heritage Site that is FAR from the typical tourist locations.

First peek at the New Hampshire Institute of Art's anagama inagural firing that ended last Sunday nioght about 11 PM. It was cool enough at 3 PM today (Thursday) that I could carefully use the camera to peek in through some holes.

Too soon to tell everything...... but....... looking good.

Compare to the unfired image here half way down page 26. Nothing in this stacking has glaze on it.... all that glass and color and such is from the clay bodies reacting with the chemistry of the wood flame and the deposition of fly ash.

Full unloading starts on Saturday, November 8th at 10 AM.

best,

Lovely mix of objects and finishes. Sweet! I imagine the scene with a circle of eager potters peeking in, then pacing back and forth as they wait for the kiln to cool enough to touch their treasures....

The NHIA anagama firing was unloaded on this past Saturday (Nov. 8th). There were 783 pieces in the kiln (yeah... we actually counted). Overall have to say it was a VERY good firing.

I had a number of pieces in there. Including a lot of chawan. I had some really good results overall. My success rate for the chawan to be good enough to be saleable AS Chawan was higher than is usual....... about 40% of what went into the kiln. That was really nice.

Here are two from the firing that are now cleaned up. (Next one will be in the second message.)

Splendid fire effects on the foot of that first one....and the second one is a bit psychedelic albeit mostly in black and white. Gorgeous!

Beautiful! Congrats to everyone involved on what sounds like a very successful firing!
