Greetings everyone and welcome to another TeaDay in the kitchen perhaps? Please drop by and share what is in your cup throughout the day.
Yesterday we discussed tea storage "issues." You can stll vote and discuss yesterday's topic.
I recently saw on the Food Channel (a fave channel!) Alton Brown showed a way to hard boil eggs. I never heard this method, but it definitely got my attention. He had an electric water kettle like the ones many of us use every day for heating water for TEA!!! Filled it with water and a half dozen eggs (I think). Hit the start button with it set for "boil" or max setting. Once the water reached boiling and shut off on its own, he timed the eggs for 15 minutes and then removed them immediately.
I have to admit, this is certainly simpler than my current method, but to place EGGS in a hot water kettle that will next time be used for heating water for TEA sounds like a travesTEA. Well, it has me curious and concerned at the same time.
So, todays topic, would you use your beloved hot water kettle for such an unconventional purpose? Please share why yes or why no.
I am looking forward to sharing this TeaDay and hard boiled eggs with everyone. Bottoms up!

Re: Sunday TeaDay 1/31/10 Shock or awe?
It was 4 eggs
Anyway, I think it's a neat idea, but mine is just different enough (smaller opening at the top) from his that I think I'd have a hard time actually getting the eggs in and out safely. That and I've never had a problem boiling them in a pot; the method is identical, it's just a difference in vessel. Hell, I've boiled water for my tea in the pots that I cook with every day (yay cheap college student!). As long as it's clean, I don't feel like the tea is any different.
No tea yet, I haven't gone to bed

Mmm I voted maybe... perhaps leaning towards not likely. I've seen him heat up stock in a kettle too I believe (which was one of my original reasons for wanting an electric kettle).
I think I'd be fine cooking eggs (but I don't like boiled eggs *blah*) but if I were to do something like a stock, I'd want a non-tea dedicated kettle.

No way!
It's too easy to hard-boil eggs in a regular pan of water than to risk ruining my tea and contaminating my Zoji.
(BTW, I put eggs in pan with cold water to cover, bring to a boil; boil 5 minutes, turn off heat but leave pan on burner; cover and let sit for another 15 minutes. Drain off hot water and run cold water over for a couple of minutes. They get cooked through every time and you don't have to boil them to death.)

Don't like eggs.
Finishing a tea day that started with Sencha Select from the Cultured Cup, then moved on to a comparative tasting of three Wuyi oolongs from Norbutea, and finished with a gongfu session, 20 or 30 infusions, of Honey Orchid Phoenix Oolong from Tea Habitat.
Green to toasty to spicy/floral. A very nice tea day.

Can't say I would use mine...
However, if I decide to get a zoji my kettle just may take on that role!!!

I don't have a kettle that would do this. If I did... I wouldn't do it. I've seen many boiled eggs crack. Wouldn't want to "flavor" the kettle.

Nope. I have a little kettle that's perfect for boiling eggs in.
Having some White Peony today.

I've been boiling eggs for a few decades using more conventional methods, and I've been pretty happy with the results, so I don't see any need for special equipment.

When I was a kid, we once boiled hotdogs in parent's percolator. The dogs turned out ok but the pot wasn't. Now that I am an adult and quite snotty about my tea prep, I would not use my pot to boil anything but water!

I don't have an electric kettle at home
Something faintly relevant - I have a thermo pot. The pot is made of stainless steel, and it sits in a thermo shell. Sometimes I make a pot of mixture of water, spices soy sauce and cooking wine. Then I would let chicken wings marinated in the pot for a day. Then I would heat the pot of chicken wing to boiling, remove top foams and put the pot in its thermo shell (which maintains temperature like thermos maintaining water temperature). 20-25 minutes the chicken wings are done! All the energy it costs is that needed to bring the pot to boiling in several minutes. I use the pot for other meats that require longer cooking time, and it saves a lot of energy.

I don't have a kettle. If I did then probably wouldn't use it for anything but boiling water.
