Love for Shiboridashi

by Ambrose » Oct 25th, '10, 16:00

I find the shiboridashi to be very simple and highly effective. Something very romantic about it, the way it pours, they way it handles and I love the wide opening. It makes a surprisingly very clean cup of tea.

Anyone else love brewing up in a shiboridashi?

I brew up sencha, gyokuro, sometimes light oolongs.

I love the look Petr's Shiboridashi, but as of yet I do not own one. :(

Just curious, what's the capacity of yours?

They are very cool. I will be buying a shiboridashi, but do not own one yet.

Have plenty of houjins, and the similar Korean versions that more resemble houjins than shiboridashi.

My concern is the flatter shape and I would tend to want to use for gyokuro for which they were intended? I already use very cool water for gyokuro and just looking at one it seems they would lose heat faster than a taller houjin.

Ambrose, yours actually appears more intermediate between houjin and shiboridashi?

Very nice. Did you order that set directly from Petr?

Yes sir I bought it back around June of this year.

Chip- these do loose heat but not too bad, especially great for gyokuro and I find myself brewing sencha no prob too.

The really low flat ones though ... the Tokoname site has some of these. I won't judge til I try them, but the heat loss on the very low flat ones has to be much more substantial than the more upright ones like yours.

Thanks for answering.

Like I said, I definitely want to get one.

Looks like a great multi-tasker. :D Does it retain heat well so that it could be used for more oxidized/roasted teas? Was it a special order? How long did it take to get from Europe to the States?

Edit: see you answered my first question.

I often use this one which has the form of a houhin, but no filter as regular houhins have.

A flatter version exists, sold by artistic nippon

I really love your Shiboridashi from Petr. I'd like to have one like this by myselfe. And I like this cups too - how much ml do they hold?

I found out that for me the best brewing vessel is a Gaiwan. Easy to handle, nice designs and most of the time cheap :)
For my Sencha I use a Kyusu. And for Gyokuro I got a Shiboridashi from Horaido - but I am not used to it yet.

Noesis - you can use it for anything, I know Bret of teagoober uses his for everything. You would have to only adjust your brewing temps according to the way yours behaves as in heat loss/retention.

entropyembrace- thank you I do love the black magda, its velvet soft to the touch. Such a beautiful and special glaze, pictures dont show do it justice.

olivierco - thats a beauty! dont look now but the air hole is backwards  tell us more about it, maker? clay? capacity?

Marco- thank you, you will love it, the cup is about 4.5 to the rim but comfortable at 4oz which matches the capacity of the shiboridashi. You will get used to it the more you use it.

Im excited I should be getting two more in the next few months.

Both are from Shimizu Genji (Hokujo). Mine holds about 100ml, the shiboridashi 60ml I guess.

That is a really nice Hokujo Olivier, I like the more upright shape.

That is a really different one, Marco. I never saw one like it. What more can you tell us?
