Your Essential Sencha?

by Chip » Nov 3rd, '10, 18:56

Do you currently have an essential sencha (or gyokuro), the one you most want to have around or have around most often?

If yes, what is your essential sencha (or gyokuro)?

Also if yes, what percentage of the time do you have this essential sencha (or gyokuro) in house and open?

For at least 4 years running, Yutaka Midori from O-Cha has been my essential sencha. Now they offer 3 different YMs, but the classic has been THE ONE. The new LE has been stiff competition however.

I affectionately call this one "Classic" though original could also be appropo since it was literally the first and for quite some time the only YM available to the West.

I try to have this around more times than not. But I purposely try not to have it open all the time. This way it always has IMPACT each time a new bag is opened.

I am still exploring Sencha as with most teas but I think I am about to start to settle down and order more favorites. So I voted maybe, as I still need to explore some more, but I have two sencha's which I am definitely sure I will order again, those being:

Ippodo's Nichi Getsu, which while it is far from amazing I think it is a great tea to have on hand for an every day sort of sencha.

O-cha's Kirameki, this actually surprised me as O-cha is most known for higher steamed teas in fact they have few Sencha's that are lightly steamed, Kirameki and one possible two others.

So both of these are definitely in the running towards becoming my essential sencha.

I have a few favorites, but all are lightly steamed. At the moment I am drinking mostly Yuuki-Cha's organic Shizuoka Sencha Tenryu Misakubo.

For Gyo.ive come to desire the Yamashita Jirushi from Maiko..I need to have some around for a weekly Gyo fix.
Sencha ive continued exploring much more..so many vendors and teas to try..One Fuka that i keep going back to is Zencha's Takumi. Not an absolute must have on hand but one i order when i want some fuka.
For Asa...which is now my preffered choice in sencha..I really liked thw warashina supreme from o-cha but ive ony had it the once..but i can see myself going back to that one. also Most of Maiko's selection such as the Maruyama and especially Kinari when in season

Zencha's Kiwami is closest to an essential sencha for me. I tend not to repeat teas very often but I always keep some Takumi and Ultimate sencha in the house.

i always have some yutaka midori and some saemidori at home and i want to try a wide range of vendors who sell them.

so far i tried the ym "classic" from o-cha and the "magokoro" from yuuki-cha, and both are high quality.

i still have a bag of unopened YM-limited edition from o-cha in the fridge, and i hope that it'll be good like the other ones or even better!?!

Maybe. I still have a lot to try. I've said it before, but I particularly love this year's sencha miyabi from 0-cha and can't imagine placing an order with them in the future and not including this. A close second is YM Supreme.

I like it because of it's sweet grassy flavor, but it also has the depth/body of a fukamushi like YM. It isn't quite a full fukamushi-cha though; it's spent leaves are not quite as broken and make for an easy pour and easy dump-out. They are much more elegant to behold in their wet heap than fuka. From looking at the dry leaf you would think it is fukamushi though.

Not to be left out is the dry aroma. Not so much a heavy aromatic, but the subtlety is amazing and very different from the light steamed and deep steamed sencha's I've had. I am prone to opening the tin just take a deep inhale even if I'm not planning to prepare it.

I have a lot more to try, but Miyabi is the current fave.
