pu-erh shop wet storage CNNP cakes

by gasninja » Mar 22nd, '11, 12:09

Has any one tried the the 90's CNNP wet storage cakes. I am interested in trying them but would like to hear from someone who has first. They make it kind of intimidating with their warning. Are they just making sure people know what they are getting or is it going to be offensive. Definetly not faint of heart but definetly don't wanna spend my money oon something that isn't drinkable. Anyone whose tried them would love to hear from you . I am New to this forum and sort of new to pu-erh would appreciate some advice.

Traditional Hong Kong storage is very damp and there´s going to be some degree of mold growth in the tea. Some people really like the results and others really hate it.

The closest thing I can think of in western culture that you might be familiar with are strong aged cheese which can often be intentially moldy too. So what you think of those kind of cheeses might be a good rough indicator of how likely you are to enjoy HK storage puerh.

I have no idea about the particular cakes you´re refering to, are there samples available so you dont have to commit to an entire cake which you might not like?

I like aged cheese, but I don't like wet storage pu. I had an opportunity to try it once, but I could not finish one cup. Of couse, that was not 90's CNNP cake either. With the same money or less, however, I would rather buy a nice dry aged cake.

I rather like HK storage teas, but have not tried those specifically. No harm in buying a sample, surely?

Break into pieces, exposed to air..let humidity go

Or use a porous Yixing..filter out the humidity

Once wet it will be difficult for the humidity to go away.

Many Puerh sellers in Beijing are affirmed to think 'early days in Guangdong, later days in Beijing (dry)' storage as a fantastic way to develope a balance.

Well-dried wet Puerhs, one actually needs an extreme keen tongue to judge the storage condition of past.

So you hate ALL pu from before 1995 with a very few exception?

I do  But that's based on my limited experience. If someone throw me another old tea sample, I would never mind trying it

So was most pre-1995 Hong Kong storage wet? - if we roughly define wet as a half-basement warehouse in Hong Kong with tanks of water in it to promote humidity.

There must be different degrees of control on how wet the storage is in Guangdong and how long it is. But an extreme version of it (strictly controlled, very wet storage) has almost become an industry. That's why there are so many 90s CNNP cakes on taobao

You meant "very wet" here as literally sprayed with water?

And they're great! I wonder how they really store it in malaysia to yield that result.

Why do people keep thinking that "wet" means "water tanks spewing water all over the tea"?

Dass -- true, but I'm not sure how dry those things really are, to be honest. Well stored "wet" is very good. Poorly stored dry is bad. There are no absolutes in this.

A lot of it just comes down to individual taste....even well stored wet just tastes like wet basement to some people.
