"plug-in" strainer for single hole yixing?

by Math » Aug 27th, '11, 08:21

Hi there teafreaks!

Where can I find a "plug-in" (i.e loose) strainer for my 110 ml Single hole yixing online?

I remember seeing them for sale somewhere but can't remember where..

Any ideas are very welcome.

When I come to think of it I have another one 200 ml yixing that also needs a strainer.

In Taiwan most teapot sellers make their own by cutting a square section of mesh screen and attaching it with a piece of fairly stiff wire bent into the shape of a "U" where the corners have been squared off.

I think I have seen a universal plugin in metal strainer for those single whole pot in a local shop here.

It is a round thingi with 2 pin to support it. Kind of not a good idea, cause the pin is sharp. May leave a scar. Moreover, some people don't like to use metal strainer (regardless plugin or external) cause it will change the taste of tea.

Stainless steel wire ought not to affect the taste too strongly. Might a non-stainless steel wire even sweeten it a bit, like iron-rich clay or a cast iron kettle to heat the water?

I don't know of a good source here, though they're commonly available at tea / teapot shops in Taiwan and on auction sites. If you don't find one, let me know. I may still have a few extras.

Yes saw it and fell in love.. Just wondering how much one of those custom jobs would cost to produce? :)

Yes it is exactly one of these I'm looking for! I've seen pictures of one somewhere. Do you know where I can order one online? I wouldn't mind a small scratch on the inside of the pot however the thought of it affecting the taste makes me a bit concered though. :?

Thanks for the kind words. I used 16 gauge 99.9% fine silver wire. 1/2oz was enough to make 7-9 filters.

Ting thanks a lot for your helpfulness. I'm going to talk to an aquantance of mine who happens to be a sliversmith and ask him to do something like this for me. Let's hope he can do it. A customized silver strainer is probably the coolest yixing accessory you can have! :)

I found a promising looking strainer on both eBay and Amazon that I've ordered. You can find it on either by searching for "japanese teapot spout strainer".
