2015 Yutaka Midori quality...

by Kevangogh » Apr 21st, '15, 00:19

This is an informational post for those who are Yutaka Midori fans. There was A LOT of rain in April here in Japan, and it affected the quality of 2015 Yutaka Midori considerably. By that I mean, it looks good, but it's simply not as aromatic as in years past. I've tried many samples from various sources, the suppliers all say the same thing - too much rain. Some samples are "pretty good", but wherever you happen to get your YM from, do not be surprised if 2015 YM is not as good as 2014 YM was. For us to get a decent one, we will be paying more than last year and it won't be as good as last year.

It is what it is…just giving everyone a heads up.

Thank you for the heads up, regardless.

I wonder if this will affect that "must sit down moment" when I smell the dry YM leaves warming in my preheated kyusu ...

I'm sad to hear that Kevin :( but thank you for keeping us informed. I was really looking forward to shincha YM this year :( I might have to switch it for some Sae Midori.

I'm not saying YM won't be good, it's still pretty good, but I don't think this years will match last years...

Will there be other Shincha except SM and YM in the coming days?

Yes, they're just about all coming in as shincha...

I started this thread regarding YM but now I'm finding this will be a problem with other varieties from Uji, Shizuoka, etc, as well. Just a heads up - really good sencha will be scarce this year.

When you say scarce it sounds serious. Do you think it's a good idea to buy green tea of 2014 now as much as I can? As you said the tea of 2014 are stored in fridge and the condition are good...

If you have a favorite, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea. There will be good green tea but it won't be as easily obtained as last year and it could be more expensive.

yet most of my favourite tea had gone out of stock ( Miyazaki sencha, oku-midori flavor ) and it wasn't cheap so stocking it up was impossible

I bite the bullet and bought some of the remaining stock of 2014 tea of O-Cha. I had already seen the raise of tea price in other shop.

Some of the tea I've never try ( Uji variety, karigane tea ). After all, any authentic green tea will do for daily drinking. I hope the price of 2015 tea would be affordable because I have no job now.
