Tea pairing for huge Yixing
Hi everyone! I recently got a huge old pot (500ml+), and I am thinking about what tea to pair it with. I was considering hong cha or hei cha because they are more suitable for grandpa style. What would people use these for in late Qing/ROC? Green tea?

Re: Tea pairing for huge Yixing
Bigger Yixing teapots are commonly used in northern China, so my guess would either be lu cha, hong cha or molihua cha

My security guard uses much larger pots for tieguanyin and shui xian. And he's Fujianese!

Normally, you wouldn't be using a pot like this for drinking alone.steanze wrote:Hi everyone! I recently got a huge old pot (500ml+), and I am thinking about what tea to pair it with. It's awesome that your security guard uses Yixing pots by the way.

Yes, I am not dreaming of using it aloneTead Off wrote:Normally, you wouldn't be using a pot like this for drinking alone. This is definitely for family style/group drinking and not for the 'serious', 'analytical' style of aficianados. I usually use large teapots for hongcha, but oolongs, both green and roasted can be thrown in. For those dimsum gatherings, shu would be perfect.

I think I'll try with hongcha and see how it goes

Re: Tea pairing for huge Yixing
I use large pots for public tea services. I have my two largest pots for shu which are 500+cc in size.
Re: Tea pairing for huge Yixing
I usually use huge Yixings for Heicha, green and white teas..drinking straight without a pitcher (grandpa style). I sometimes found Sheng and Hongcha can be bitter drinking that way..
In China, it's popular to brew green tea using a huge Yixing in the summer..Yixing teapot was originally used for loose-leaf green (mid-Ming, there was only one type of tea!)..Oolong and Hongcha came out by mid-Qing...ethnics drank Heicha but I doubt they used a Yixing teapot

Thanks for the suggestions!!
I think i will give it a try with green tea Charlie, I have been tempted to try because of the tradition of using Yixings with green tea back then and your comment tipped the scale in favor of giving it a shot. Last time I tried green tea in a Yixing it was not that great, but it's going to be a fun experiment in any case
Are there particular types of green tea you make in your huge Yixings?

I bet green tea back then was not like it is now. But you should not have a problem brewing green tea in a large Yixing. The control that you usually have with smaller pots is more or less gone. Drinking it straight without a pitcher seems like a very inelegant way to drink tea. However, to each his own.

Smaller or bigger, the clay should be sandy and very good that takes away the bitter taste left over and the shape also prefers a stout, flat looking at best, the amount also has to be little..it's how Yixing clay got its fame back then..."absorbs the bitter taste, retain aroma and good heat retention"
Old time processing with a bit different from now, but still bud-y leaf picked during the early spring.
It was just last time that I reversed their thought, that huge Yixing without a pitcher and green tea could deliever a very fine taste, to my tea fellows...but they are not so elegant men as some folks

Re: Tea pairing for huge Yixing
Well I usually use just a tall glass to drink green tea, so using a pot is going to increase the number of tea utensils from 1 to 2

Re: Tea pairing for huge Yixing
I saw some videos of Yixing potters drinking tea while working directly from the spout of their big teapots...
