Best way to split a cake in half?

if you got a cake to split with someone, how would you actually go about dividing it in half?

Bring it into any Karate dojo and ask the master for help. :D

Other than that, if you want clean, you can use a band saw or any table saw. You might even have a long enough knife to fairly evenly slice it.

would you try to split it to preserve the circular section (end up with two half-thickness discs) or would you split it to get two semicircles with a saw?

the latter, it's easiest.

Actually the former is the easier way, and usually better because you can preserve most of the leaves. Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th86Ge4fFJs

Just go around with a puerh pick or knife poking into the cake over and over until the halves seperate

Very cool, but do you think it will be equal in weight if your aim is to share a cake? I'm not sure.

This is the best way indeed.
You can see other illustrations there : http://www.puerh.fr/article/mettre_en_j ... _puerh.htm ( end of page - use google translate if needed )
and for an egal weight, use a scale and deduct the missing weight by removing small pieces from the heaviest part ...

Hello Pedant,
Aside from all the elegant methods that are available, I think an easy and efficient mechanical solution is to use a big knife and cleave the cake down the middle of the flat surface. No need to worry about a bit of crushed leaves. Those butcher cleavers work well.

I wish to add, that the advantage here is that the thickness and edges of the cake can still be clearly seen.

if there is an active board or community where people are splitting puerh cake ordres, please let me know. very interested in that.

Cheers.

You'd chop up so many leaves

I take my suggestion back...
I tried and failed to cut the middle section of a tightly compressed cake. :|

Breaking up the cake would seem like the best way!

I would suggest giving it to a US customs agent.

They seem to be quite skilled at ripping into people's shipments of tea and splitting cakes in half. :(
