Those awsome tea tray have been made from slices of a very very old oak beam, then polished and finished with natural oil. Darker and ragged edges are due to wood oxidation that happen during tens of years while the beam was a part of some house or barn.
The other side is darker due to different oil used for finishing it.
I have never seen anything like this and I suppose you neither. I have another two for personal use.
They were made by a friend of mine who is working in reclaimed wood.
For me, those trays are perfect exemplification of Japanese sense of transient and unperfect beauty that get more and more beautiful as time passes.
