Houjicha--Thoughts?

I just found out about a tea I never knew about before.
Houjicha
It's a green tea that is roasted instead of steamed. Instead of green looking, the tea looks reddish. It's supposed to taste earthy and makes you feel warm inside.

Has anyone tried it?

yes, it is pretty common in japan during and after meals.
hoji = roasted, cha = tea
there is also a version made mostly of tea stems (kuki): kuki-hojicha

it is kind of an inexpensive comfort drink.

I've had several different houjichas and enjoyed them all. An interesting variation on the sencha theme.

I also thought I was ordering houjicha and got a delivery of the stems and leaves version. Not at all thrilled by it. Woody and not very interesting. It feels like work to make and drink this tea so I can use it up and move on to something more pleasant. Other versions may be better.

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for some good roasted green tea samplers. I was surprised that I actually like Hojicha than Genmaicha, which has been my staple for a long time. Ditto on what the other poster said on Kukicha - you just can't wait to get it done and over with so you can move on to the next tea. I find it too metallic-y, if not like watered down "earthy" taste.
