Can ayone recommend a rice cooker?

by joelbct » Sep 5th, '08, 11:30

I would like to find one without a nonstick/teflon surface, if that is at all possible, like just stainless steel or something.

Slightly on topic, regarding your wanting one w/out Teflon. I was just reading an article which I cannot find at the moment that stated the concern with Teflon was in a gasous toxin released in an overheated pan. The solids or flakes were not the toxins/carcinogens that has made me cringe everytime I look at my Teflon pan.

The point of the article was that one does not have to fear Teflon as long as you are not super heating above I think 500*F at which point the gas is released.
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!

Strange, I've never seen a teflon one. Most are aluminum or stainless, should be easy enough to find - try Amazon.

Ah, but Teflon would still be a concern if you have birds. See here: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm ... cleid=2874

got one from Macy's ~ 35$, works just fine, nonstick, there is a 1 layer of rice on the bottom that sometimes gets browned, but that's where the heat comes from so its to be expected. japanese/korean stores have nicer expensive models ($100 and more) that probably have better/more even cooking, larger capacity. ...i dont use mine much 'cause rice keeps me hungry (its mostly carbs anyway)

I think you're going to have a hard time finding a non-non stick one. I haven't seen one in ages that wasn't. It's not going to get anywhere near the level of heat to release poisonous-to-birds gasses and they are used by 100's of millions of people every day who live longer than we do... fwiw..

edit - actually, there are the microwaveable plastic rice cookers also that aren't clear plastic for the pba concerned folks.

I highly recommend the Zojirushi fuzzy logic / micom programmable series. non-stick interior, perfect rice every time, can do wild rice, etc and a great tea refresh roaster using the reheat cycle.

Is there a particular reason for a nonstick rice cooker? Is it just the fear of heating it to 500F and releasing toxic gas?

Ah, just noticed the request for no non-stick surface. The Zoji has a non-stick surface. Rice cookers can't reach even 220, not sure what you are worried about.

I have seen non-stick ones, just not electric.. That and it is in no way suitable for a household. Unless you oh, want a few hundred servings of rice at a time.

I share some of the worries about non-stick cookware, but I personally still use a non-stick one (a Sanyo 3.5 C). However, in case it's of interest to some tea people... there are some yixing clay (well supposedly - I'm guessing it is probably actually a similar clay from elsewhere, but it's at least earthenware) rice cookers.

I've been wanting to try one for a while, but it seems like it would be hard to clean, and of course g-d forbid you drop the pot.

Would be curious to hear about everyone's experiences if they've tried using one of these. I've seen a similar (but different, IIRC) one at a local shop.

In Iran they actually look to scortch the outside of the rice when in the cooker. It comes out as a large cake with a crust. It's absolutely delicious. They call it Ta-Deek. I don't know how they would spell it in english but that's how it was pronounced. No no-stick needed, just an oiled inside.

Here they're calling it Tah-Chin, but my old Iranian boss called it Ta-Deek.. maybe a local dialect thing.
