matcha cat?

by UncleIroh » Oct 12th, '08, 16:01

hi, tea people! for the last few weeks, my aged black cat has insisted on drinking the discarded, mildly matcha-flavored water in my kensui/waterbowl. and i mean, INSISTED, as in he won't be disuaded. so i just let him share. but, if i'm not mistaken, i saw another pic of a cat drinking matcha remnanats on here recently. it might've been posted by geekgirlunveiled? anyway, what i'm wondering is, have we discovered that cats like matcha? anyone else have a pet that displays a weird jones for tea?

Yep, that would be Bubba the matchacat.

I suspect this goes along with their wanting to eat houseplants. Heh.

My mini-dachsie is crazy about oolong and sake.

how very odd, huh? my cat is decrepit and not interested in much these days, but he sure wants that leftover water. almost like it's matcha cut with catnip. it's nice to have a tea companion now and then, even if he is a crappy conversationalist.

Hummm my cat is the pickiest of eaters. He won't even eat steak if I cut him a bite. Strange! I'll have to see how he feels about matcha next time I make it.

My cat has tried Dan Cong oolong, but that is it so far. She tends to enjoy sweeter breakfast foods like maple syrup so I guess the oolong was right up her alley.

After reading this post I decided to introduce my cat into the world of tea. Kittie seems to love Sencha. She actually finished her bowl. Tomorrow we move on to a light oolong.

My mother's cat is crazy for Ice Power which is a cold therapy liniment. The liniment has menthol and very pungent smell. One would think it would completely overpower cat's sensitive nose. Someone spilled Ice Power on the floor and even though the floor was properly wiped, the cat still goes there to lick the floor. Cats are curious creatures!

I found a few places online that said "The lethal dose for caffeine is 150 mg/kg for dogs, cats, and people."

I don't think the lethal dose is something you need to worry about, but it is always wise to be careful with all food that is not natural for a cat. Caffeine is strong and humans who overdose it have told about very not-nice effects. Also I don't think there's studies on how small doses of caffeine eaten often affects cat. I have worked with cat's for more than two years and yeah they tend to eat a lot of human food. The main rule is not to give them it to often. Especially sugar. But even shrimps are not good for cats if they eat it often (one shrimps has 2 weeks cat dose of magnesium) and most of them are lactose intolerant, but still kitties get a lot of cow milk. And even the popular cat food brands are not very good for their health

well, my teacat is 18, so i don't think a little caffiene is going to damage his longevity. besides, he only ever gets the barest traces of matcha after i rinse out a bowl. i don't think i'd give a full-strength cup of tea to a pet, if only because i'd want it for myself!

Yes, we demand photographs of cats knockin' back the matcha.

And kittens getting their first taste of the hard stuff.
