How many grams per 14-16 oz mug?

by Katmandu » Feb 26th, '09, 13:28

Hi everyone! I was curious about the number of grams peeps are using for their black teas that are larger in size. I know parameters for all my oolong, green and whites but because I do big mugs of the blacks I noticed today that they are a little weak...I know it all boils down to a matter of personal taste, but I'm curious of the numbers.

2.3g per 6 oz is the standard western brewing if I remember well.
So about 6g for your mug.

I go one up from olivierco. 7g in my travel mugs for 4 minutes unless it's Lapsang, Shu or anything Decaf and then I add a minute or two.

wow I have been making mine way weak then. I just got my scale in today. I have been making my tea with about 13-15oz of water in the inginutea. I have been using 1 heaping teaspoon. this came out to 2.2 grams on the scale.... I just weighed out 4.6 grams and am boiling some water.... I will let you know how it turns out :D

edit: fixes units of measure :D

4.6 oz? I hope you mean grams. 4.6 oz of tea is an enormous amount for 13-15 oz of water. Although, I have seen certain very special teas brewed at 5g tea per 1oz of water.

well I think 3 minutes was a little long to steep it came out good and strong but a little bitter.

maybe 2:30 next time.
much more flavour though

just out of curiosity with teas like earl grey bravo that have pieces on orange in them, do you pick the pieces out and weigh just the tea or do you just weight what ever you get out of the tin?

It depends on how much the pieces of bergamot rind actually weigh. My guess is not that much, and as long as they make up a small percentage of the total weight of tea, it really shouldn't matter.

It's not likely you are using a volumetric pipette to measure out the water. So the differences in weight shouldn't be that big of a deal.

no I did go so far as to make a line on the out side of my ingenuitea that is 13 oz (I use 15oz mugs) :D 13oz leaves enough room in the mug for cream and sugar and have enough buffer at the top not to be full to the brim.

I just finished the cup I made earlier and I have to say It was 100% better than any others even with the little bit of a bitter taste... a slightly lower steep time and I think im in business. :D

I also have a strange phenomena I cannot explain. I used to do 2 steeps and toss half of the first one out because of getting dry mouth. I drank all of this first steep and have no dry mouth??? seems like using more tea actually remedied this problem....

I cannot explain why though...

nope

I do 3:00 from the second im done pouring. I started out at 5 minutes and almost lost my lunch it was so bitter. I tried 4 and realized it was better but still bitter. with the amount of tea I was using 3:00 seemed like the magic number... now with more tea I think I might have to drop it down a little more. 2:30 will be my next first steep.

im going to resteep this one in a few minutes at 5 minutes and see how it comes.

I just realised that I will need to remeasure my 13oz line now that I am now using more tea.
