Deer Jerky??
So...there i was wandering around Atlanta after my training at our corporate offices. Was there for a few days. I needed to get some fill-the-time-gap tea's while waiting for the new stuff to come in since i was virtualy out. So in and out of a few chinese markets I go and picked up some stuff to get me through. One was in a little cannister 50g I think and labeled "ming qian long jing".. Ok..great..fairly cheap so i picked it what the heck right? I open it up to check it out and it smells exactly like deer jerky!?? I havent brewed any yet..I am afraid...ALTHOUGH.. I got another "west Lake Dragonwell" at a different market ( figured I'd take a chance and try a couple) that oddly enough does have a hint of that aroma..just very very slight..not like the first for sure. Im not sure which i will actually try..hmm

Lesser grades of LJ can be somewhat smokey or "overfried" to mask the low quality leaf, or just simply poorly produced. I had one that reminded me of salted cod ... come to think of it, it was in a can in Chinatown Philly. Generally, canned LJ in Chinatowns will be pretty bogus and cheap. You get what you pay for in the low end of LJ.

I would be very curious to see a pic of the can

Is that a production or expiration date on the can?
I've been to many Chinese markets in middle/large cities. As some of you may know, there is long jing in every of such market, but I don't yet know an Asian who has ever bought it there
The black/red, oolong, puerh, I know some older Cantonese people buy them from Chinese market. But green tea, I don't know anyone buying from there. Since most of the markets don't have many non-Asian customer either, I assume the tea has been sitting on shelf forever. Besides, the tea could be a fake tea from the beginning.

actually...it wasnt that bad.. sorta fruity but with a bit of an almost smoky flavor..which i assume was the jerky-ness smell

Thanks Iannon for sharing the pic! I haven't seen that one before, does it say who the manufacturer is? Most of the Chinese cans do.

it tasted much more mild then it smelled.. it wasnt bad really..just a little different then i have been used to. it had a bit of a fruity background taste with a top note of that kinda smoky seasoning flavorThirsty Daruma wrote:Actually sounds quite good. There are tons of deer here in PA aren't there?!!!!!!! Almost everyday I see a herd of about 20-25 consisting of 3 bucks go through my yard.
