Wednesday TeaDay 3/25/09 Tea Experiments III

by Chip » Mar 25th, '09, 01:20

Good TeaDay everyone! I hope to see what is in your cup throughout the day.

Yesterday's top response by a near majority was, "When brewing (new) tea I experiment basically when I am not satisfied with my normal brewing methods/parameters." You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic, Tea Experiments III. Are you experimenting with brewing vessels? Different origins, types, materials, glazes, sizes, shapes, ways to filter/screen the leaves?

I will be looking for you today on TeaDay, bottoms up!

Remember to check out the Signature Blend Box Pass and sign up!

Boy, miss a few days here and everything looks different. :?

I'm always on the look-out for a better way to strain Rooibos when I make it. It seems to gum up every filter I've tried, or pass through it...and I am not one of those people who can enjoy a cup with cloudy floating pieces in it.

Yes, I am definitely experimenting - I just recently added several yixing to my
teaware selection and that is making things pretty interesting right now. Also
downsizing to several smaller pots.

At the moment, I don't think I am experimenting in any of these ways.

I am a little worried that this tea is not standing the test of time, unlike the pictures in the book.

Yes, doing some minor experimentation. Perhaps I will experiment more with oolongs or puer, but I haven't been drinking many of them for a long time.

Yunnan golden needles this morning.

Hmmm, I certainly have been trying a gawain a bit more recently, and occasionally I will employ a strainer. But unfortunately experimenting with tea ware is a much more expensive prospect than experimenting with tea itself. So I have been experimenting where I can, but it's not an all-out battle.

I decided to go for a "plan old shu" today -- 2006 Golden Sail. One of the first shus that I tried, and I greatly enjoyed it. I was curious to taste it after many months of having tried many, many other types of pu-erh. . .

Interesting.

It seems to be losing its strength ... although it is possible that my tastes have changed and the tea remains the same.

I haven't tasted that one for a while either, but I also have good memories of it.

Houjicha karigane with my lunch. Not much room to experiment with this kind of tea.

It isn't that I don't WANT to experiment, but teaware is typically the most expensive part of a tea obsession and since tightening my budget I have stayed away from considering new teaware acquisitions. :(

But, I was helping another teachatter look for teaware the other day and I have to say it was really hard NOT to go down that road.

I do have a yixing, a ceramic pot and a stone pot (different, but similar shapes). I have a porcelain and stainless steel strainer I use for my gong fu sessions and then I have three different diffuser baskets - 1 nylon and 2 stainless steel (but radically different shapes). Each has its own perpose and place and someday I will add more to the collection - just not today

In my cup: Adagio Coconut Pouchong :?

I am experimenting, but at a slower pace then I would like. Being in college by budget is always tight an storage space does not exist.

I experiment a little, just enough so that I have teaware that is appropriate for what I'm brewing. I have a two-cup porcelain pot, two porcelain gaiwan, a 270ml kyusu with a steel infuser, and a 110ml glazed hohin. There is probably a ~360ml kyusu with a ceramic filter in my future. When that happens I'll save my little kyusu for fukamushi.

Rou Gui in my cup this morning.
