Sighting of green tea in an anime

by Rainy-Day » Jun 21st, '09, 00:40

So I was watching Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya a couple of days ago, and what did I see? Green tea made in a kyusu with water poured from what looked like a Zoji pot, and later the main character is heard thinking to himself: "I miss ms. Asahina and her tea!" (not sure if it had more to do with Ms. Asahina's prettiness or with delicoius flavour of tea). There was another scene where a different girl invites Kyon home (SPOILER:

to tell him that she's an alien),

.. and pours him no less than 3 cups of tea before uttering a single word.

Two other animes that I can remember having more than passing references to green tea were Mezzo Soprano (or Mezzo, I can't remember), where the hero and a girl are drinking tea and he says that it's very bitter. "Yes.. Perfect!" - replies she.

The third one was the Avatar: the last airbender, where the uncle who is traveling with an evil prince always makes green jasmine tea, if I remember right, in a kyusu, and can't stop talking about how wonderful and fragrant the tea is. The prince, bent on world domination, cringes every time green tea is mentioned.

That's all I could think about now. I'm sure I can remember more animes with green tea. I hope I'm not off-topic here..

It's funny that in most anime the characters drink black tea, regardless of the setting of the series.

Rozen Maiden's Shinku and Kiddy Grade's Lumière come to mind immediately, but I always watch more closely whenever it's tea time.

I have an impression the Hidamari Sketch girls are drinking green tea though...lots. And snacking. =)

I know Fuu worked in a tea house in Samurai Champloo, but I don't recall the tea type animated.

I think Fuu worked in an general eatery.. at the start of the series, right? She promised Mugen (?) some food (dumplings?) if he would only save her.

Never seen any black tea in animes. Not once! And I saw a zillion of them, both good and bad.

In the Last Exile there's coffee featured prominently, made with a vacuum pot! I sense coffee geeks! Heh.

I'm kicking myself that I forgot that the uncle in Avatar used to run a tea shop. In fact he became famous as the tea master of the best tea shop in that town. I thought he always used Kyusu, what other kind of teapot did he use?

Here is Haruhi Suzumiya cast sitting down for some tea:

She may work in a general eatery compared to a traditional japanese tea house, but they call it a tea house in the show.
ANN calls it a tea house too...

"You want the taste of dried leaves in boiled water?"

"Er, yes. With milk."

"Squirted out of a cow?"

"Well, in a manner of speaking I suppose ..."

guitar: definitely a must-see. Very clever and funny although sometimes it gets a bit slow. I only saw 3 first volumes, so.. we'll see how it goes from there.

Spot: Ah, okay, I must have missed that, then. I should watch it again, it's my favorite series. Watanabe is almost disturbingly good. Wish he made a series every year..

Did you watch michiko to hatchin? http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?sh ... e&aid=5779

I liked the style of anime, very similar to champloo and bebop.[/url]

Did they drink tea at all in Ouran High School Host Club? I remember the ep where Haruhi introduced the posh boys to cheap instant coffee but I can't recall any tea.

Same with the school festival cafés in Azumanga Daioh(and Kimura-sensei asking for pool water :D )

As for Kiddy Grade, Mercredi is shown in the OP beside a very European-looking tea set and a dark green caddy of the type Fortnum and Mason's used to sell. Indeed, a few minutes into ep 1 she greets Eclair and Lumière and telling them some nice tea has arrived from somewhere in the galaxy, in the foreground you can see the same caddy with 'Fartnum & Muson' printed on it :)

Spot: Haven't seen because it's not on netflix yet :-(. But it was already recommended to me by a friend who also is an anime fan. Isn't that the one where Watanabe directed one episode or made music for it or something? Unfortunately I don't have a TV subscriptions so I try to get all my anime from netflix.

I think like every other episode of Bleach has tea in it.
